GW price rant (why Mantic is getting more of my money)

So I'm a little miffed at the Bretonnian Finecast releases; I really wanted 2 Trebuchets and maybe some questing Knights to finish off my Bret army. Sadly no more. To Ebay and trademe.

The Fay Enchantress                 $ 73.00
Bretonnian Lord with Lance          $ 48.00
Bretonnian Damsel with Sword        $ 48.00
Bretonnian Damsel with Staff        $ 48.00
Bretonnian Battle Standard Bearer   $ 46.00
Bretonnian Grail Knights            $146.00
Bretonnian Questing Knights         $146.00
Bretonnian Grail Reliquae           $ 94.00
Bretonnian Trebuchet                $105.00
Unicorn                             $ 33.00

So for the same amount $150  as one unit of Grail Knights I purchased 1200 points of Mantic Kings of War Orcs from the Kickstarter, which are comparable in quality if not better than the clunky knights and I will probably use the miniatures in Fnatasy games as well. Here is an impromptu list of what I have at the moment. This currently retails at probably around $200.

Don't you think it's rather disparate?

I've started cleaning and assembling the Orcs: 9 Ax dudes, 4 great Axes, Wip the half Cast and 10 Boar riders done. At first I was a little miffed that there was so very few options on each sprue but when I compared the sprues together they were all interchangeable so it allows for a fair bit of flexibiility and swapping bits when you have mutiple sprues to draw from. I must say the boar riders are by far my favourite at the moment.

  1. Amen Brother, you are certainly preaching to the converted when it comes to GW products and their pricing, especially here in the Antipodes... I long ago gave up on GW, with their price rises (I only kept with LOTR as they had the licence, but still bought from ebay where possible), codex creeps and constant chase 'the next best army' and 'unit updates'... GW = money sink hole... I just can't understand their policy, when there are so many quality competing products on the market - surely they must be constantly loosing market share???

  2. I try not to buy new anymore, maybe one thing brand new from GW for last 6 months, but there is a bitz service from the US that will ship "second hand stuff" for like 40-45% off NZ RRP including shipping.

    1. Cool thanks, I'll check it out...

I mentioned to the other local FoW guys about your "prospective Russians"... it was suggested a 4 some get together; one of the guys; Paul (the other guy doing the beach demo game with me), plays Russians too... so you could team up with him, against say Brett and me with Germans.
If you are up for it gimme a shout; scottswargaming AT gmail DOT com

  3. Share the frustration. The arms race is just getting a bit too much for me, monster on monster, Dollar on dollar... $70-80 for a single special character is making the game unaffordable for beginners, and us old hands grumble and vote with our feet. (Much as I like the format of the games.) Selling my 40K stuff (never really got into it) As you saw last night, resurrecting 1/72 WWII. $12 a box for 40-50 figures; 2 opposing infantry armies for the cost of one character...

    1. Watching your game the other night, the 1/72 scale seems a little weird. i guess it's just 20 years of wargaming prejudice. I've only started accepting 15mm as a valid gaming scale.
